Day 12 Aqaba Castle and Wadi Rum

My apology for last night that I just couldn’t finish my blog. Let’s go on.

After check in I went to the beach straight away. It was so exiting, when you know the sea that in front of you was the Red Sea . I ran to the Sea with nothing on but swimming pants. Oooouch, my foot hurts. Remember that I had a cut at the beach of Dead Sea . When I saw the beach, I founf that it was a lot of rocks and pebbles, and the grain of the sand is not fine at all. and my wound was still open up. So it made me hurt. Any way I dip into the Sea. Even the sae bed was full of pebbles and weeds. For swimmers, it was not an ideal beach.

However, for people who like snorkel diving, here definitely is not a bad choice. For the water is very clear with comfortable water temperature, and the sea is smooth. I only swam around and around in a small circle for a few time. Then I returned to the beach. As I promised myself that I will play these 2 songs in front of the 4 Seas. They are the Sea of Galilee, the Mediterranean Sea, the Dead Sea and now here I am, the Red Sea, although it was only the Gulf of Aqaba of the Red Sea . Mate, I made it!

You know how busy it was when you are only by yourself, and you have to set self timer to the camera, and then stand the camcorder to video your self. So end up I was spending a fair bit of time in doing this business. This stopped me from going back to the hostel too early, and that allow me to be able to see the most magnificent sun sat that I have ever seen. I quickly set my small tripod up, and video it, and with live music as background. Who played it? ME. What song? Anita’s song of the sating sun. People on the beach, not all but some, came over to me and gave me applause. Happy?

That night I had my dinner at the hostel. Then gave myself a clean up, and then wrote my blog. It was so tired, I couldn’t finish that. So I make it up now.

Last night was one of the best sleeping that I ever had. It was sweet.

Today, I didn’t have a very tight schedule. I woke up at 7. Got things packed up, finished breakfast, then I was ready to go. I took a bus to the town of Aqaba , I was so lucky that I found the Aqaba Castle without using a lot of effort. This castle was built by the Crusader. From this castle I’ve got some knowledge about the idea of the Arabic building. While I was walking around, I saw some guys were pulling a tree down. It was a gum tree, an Australian native plant. So I asked. It was planted here 20 years ago, but a storm had made the tree become dangerous. so these guys were removing this tree. While I was about to leave, this guys were sitting down and having cuppa. One of the guys yelled to me for he wanted to offer me a cup of tea. I won’t refuse. Like last time when I was in Tel- Aviv, they introduced themselves one by one to me, and asked where I was from, and then chatting about daily stupid things. Having experience like that was fun.

I saw another guy who dressed up quite different from the group I mentioned. After, I knew he was the one who supervised this tree removing business. He approached to visitors and explain the history of this castle to them. After doing this to me he asked me where I was planning to go. When he knew that I didn’t have an agenda, he suggested that he could guide me to the Wadi Rum with his car. And the price he offered was including a desert run by a 4x4 jeep. How much I asked, 38JD. Wow it was cheap. Although wadi rum was not in my plan, I know it is another must go spot. So I accepted. We had a simple lunch, then I hopped on his car. He drove me to his office. On the way, he showed me where his home was. I said that I need a cap, he drove me to the Chinatown of Aqaba because he said that, caps were cheaper there. So I went to the Chinatown of Aqaba. I don’t think there is many people know there was such a place as Aqaba Chinatown.

After all this we were heading the desert. It was about 100 odd km from Aqaba. It was a hot and sunny day, we prepared a lot of water in the car. We reached the visitor centre. He bought tickets of 4x4 for us. Then we hopped onto one and drove down to the sand an off to the desert.

Wadi rum was in the south of Jordan . It was famous because of its sculpted rock landscape. There was a book named the seven pillars of wisdom had mentioned Wadi Rum. Some of the shots in the movie Lawrence of Arabia filmed here. Everywhere in the desert you can see Bedouins wonder around with their animals.

Sometimes you can see modern Bedouins driving their 4x4s with everything stacking up to double the height of the jeep running on the sand.

We returned from the desert. He took a hitch hiker. This men was chatting with Arabic, which I didn’t get. The story was that this hitch hiker asked my driver if he could fix up some problems in his kitchen or not. You know what. My driver drove to his home. So I had a chance of walking in a Jordanian people’s home. The driver said that he was a poor man. But as I saw his home that was not a bad one. However he himself and his kids, you can only see the boys, whereas all the female is hiding away from strangers, not really dressing well. The driver said that the king of Jordan is very good to the poors. This house was given to them free. I’ve heard a few times from my driver that he loved the King Abdulla very much. This man offered my tea. We couldn’t sit inside but only sit in the front yard. After, we said goodbye to this man and went back to hostel.

I was very happy with this trip. It was not because I could visit the desert, but because everything is so unexpected. That was the beauty of the solo travelling.

I went back to the hostel. I swam the Red Sea again. And I video the sun sat. tonight the sky was not as clear as last night, yet it was still very nice.

My driver took me to Petra tomorrow. And he will be with me as a tour guide for the whole day.  He only asked for 60JD. Why not, so he will pick me up at the hostel.

Then, tomorrow the Red Ross City of Jordan , Petra .
